Information Strategy Office

The digitalization of education and research at universities is progressing at an accelerated pace. The environment in which universities are located has changed significantly over the past decade. For example, lectures have become more widely available online, academic content, such as electronic journals, has become more widely available online, research data has been accumulated in computers, and research based on simulations using supercomputers has become more widely available. In addition, digital devices themselves, such as smartphones and tablet terminals, are rapidly becoming more personalized.

In this environment, cybersecurity measures are becoming increasingly important. A wide range of activities related to cybersecurity are required, including the introduction and operation of advanced security technologies, educational activities on cybersecurity for members, the creation of policies and guidelines to support this, and the promotion of activities in collaboration with other universities. Based on this, the Information Security Office of the Information and Communications Promotion Headquarters of Nagoya University was established in April 2020. At Nagoya University, the Information Strategy Office has played a central role in various activities related to cybersecurity measures, but the Information Security Office was established independently from the Information Strategy Office.

Nagoya University formulated the "Nagoya University Basic Plan on Cybersecurity Measures" in October 2019 with the following goals: (1) Strengthen the security system; (2) Develop an effective incident response system; (3) Conduct cybersecurity education, training, and public awareness activities; (4) Conduct self-inspections and audits of information security measures; and (5) Collaborate and cooperate with other organizations. In order to achieve these goals, the Information Security Office:

  1. Emergency response to a cybersecurity incident
  2. Planning, drafting, and evaluation of cybersecurity measures
  3. Collecting and responding to the latest information on cybersecurity
  4. Development of a preventive system for cybersecurity
  5. Activities to raise awareness of cybersecurity
  6. Monitoring and response operations related to cybersecurity
  7. Strengthen cybersecurity measures through cooperation within and outside the University
  8. Human Resource Development on Cybersecurity

We are actively engaged in such activities.

While the evolution of ICT technology has made our lives much more convenient, cyber attacks that threaten our information systems and networks have become more sophisticated, and information security incidents are occurring frequently at our university. The Information Security Office is working to strengthen its information security system so that all members can conduct academic research and educational activities with peace of mind. In particular, we will work closely with relevant departments and non-academic organizations to identify the cause of an incident and quickly issue instructions for recovery, and take measures through risk analysis and evaluation, while preventing the occurrence of an incident and minimizing damage in the event of an incident. In addition, we are responsible for overall risk management related to information security, including the development of security prevention systems and awareness-raising activities. We also support the promotion of educational DX (Digital University Plan).
